As a UNESCO City of Literature, Leeuwarden promotes writing and reading in Frysl\u00e2n in a variety of ways. These efforts centre around a creative writing programme, an international artist-in-residence programme and a project to promote reading. We also contribute substantially to the Triennials planned by LF2028.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Leeuwarden City of Literature Creative Writing Programme offers writers the opportunity to develop their skills in various genres and at different levels. The programme is designed to promote an active writing culture and help talented writers become more professional. Literary translation and close collaboration between writers and translators are an essential part of the programme. The programme draws on the combined expertise of Productiehuis Explore the North, Tryater, Meeuw Jonge Schrijvers, New Noardic Wave, Iepen Up, Dichter bij Leeuwarden, Af\u00fbk and Tresoar. As part of their commitment to knowledge-sharing and multilingualism, representatives from the Leeuwarden City of Literature network deliver guest lectures, masterclasses and translation workshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Various literary arts organisations run international exchange programmes for writers. We coordinate and facilitate these initiatives, providing access to knowledge databases and putting writers in touch with local artists, local heritage and local people. We also organise new initiatives and work in partnership with the residence programmes of the Dutch Foundation for Literature (Letterenfonds) and other Cities of Literature. These exchange programmes are also interesting for translators: they get to work closely with foreign writers in residence in Frysl\u00e2n and can also travel abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lower levels of literacy and the decline in reading is a serious (national) problem. And in Frysl\u00e2n there is also considerable focus on multilingualism. Multilingualism helps raise awareness of language. It also supports the development of personal identity and fosters openness to other languages and cultures. Many initiatives designed to promote literacy, multilingualism and an interest in reading are currently underway in the province. Leeuwarden City of Literature is mapping these initiatives and is planning to launch a (complementary and unifying) international project to promote the Frisian language. Taking literature as its starting point, the project will also promote reading and multilingual literacy. We have already seen a direct increase in reading and participation in literary activities: as Leeuwarden City of Literature we are advertising these central literary activities to make them more visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leeuwarden UNESCO City of Literature supports the Triennials planned by LF2028. This means that every three years we collaborate closely with LF2028 in organising a spectacular programme of literary events aligned with the objectives and themes of LF2028. This is one of the ways in which Leeuwarden City of Literature and the literary arts help raise the profile of Leeuwarden and the province of Frysl\u00e2n and unite the arts.
